What is Hotspot?

A hotspot is a specific location that provides Internet access over a wireless local area network (WLAN). This term is often synonymous with a Wi-Fi connection. A network that creates an access point primarily includes a modem and a wireless router.

There are two types of hotspots.

It allows all users in this coverage area to access the Internet from the same network, with the Wi-Fi router whose password requirements have been removed in free Wi-Fi access points.

Commercial access points provide wireless coverage for a fee. When using a commercial hotspot to connect to the Internet, a user is often taken to a screen asking for login or payment details.

Hotspots provide convenience to millions of Internet users, but they have security issues. For example, free public hotspots are often the target of hackers and identity thieves. Attackers create rogue or fake hotspots that look similar to legitimate hotspots. If users unknowingly connect to these rogue access points and use their sensitive data for login or similar purpose, attackers can easily retrieve sensitive data using different techniques.
