What is VFAT?

VFAT stands for Virtual File Allocation Table.

Introduced with Windows 95, VFAT is an improvement on the underlying FAT file system that allows more information to be stored for each file. While the FAT file system can only store 8 characters for each filename, VFAT allows filenames up to 255 characters long.
