What is Video Random Access Memory (VRAM)?

While system Memory is excellent for launching and operating applications, VRAM is where it's at for visual processing. This RAM serves as a cache between the Processor and the video device and is used to hold the picture data that the computer shows. A photograph is first received by the CPU before being recorded to the VRAM when it is to be presented on the screen.

The data is then transformed into analog impulses and sent to the monitor by a RAM digital-to-analog converter (RAMDAC). Of course, the entire process moves by so rapidly that you are unaware of it. Because VRAM processors are dual-ported, unlike the majority of system RAM, the CPU can write a new picture to the VRAM while the display is receiving from it to update the image that is presently being presented. By doing this, the display is shielded from flashing between picture redraws.

VRAM comes in a wide variety of forms. One common variety is referred to as Synchronous Graphics Memory (SGRAM). It is a clock-synchronized, low-cost form of Memory. As opposed to a series of read, write, and update processes, data can now be changed in a single operation. This makes it possible to manage backdrop, center, and picture inserts more effectively. Rambus Dynamic RAM is another variety of VRAM (RDRAM). It was created by Rambus and has a special Rambus bus that accelerates data transmission through it. Since this processor is designed for broadcasting videos, professionals in video editing prefer it. Window RAM is a third kind of VRAM (WRAM).

This dual-ported, high-performance VRAM usually costs less than regular VRAM and has about 25% more capacity. There is also Multibank Dynamic Memory (MDRAM). Additionally, MoSys' high-performance VRAM, which splits the memory into segments of 32 KB that can be viewed separately, is used. Performance is improved generally and memory moves are more effective as a result. Another benefit of MDRAM is that it can be produced with precisely the correct quantity of memory for a specific density, making it more affordable to produce than the majority of other kinds of VRAM.
